The Interconnection Strategy of the National Gas Transmission System with the systems of the neighbouring countries was structured in 4 directions, as follows:

- Interconnection with Hungary – Szeged-Arad pipeline
- Interconnection with Bulgaria – Russe-Giurgiu pipeline
- Interconnection with Serbia.
Interconnections meant to diversify the import gas sources:
- Interconnection with Bulgaria – at Negru Voda
- Interconnection with Ukraine – at Siret/Bucecea.
Interconnections meant to develop new storage capacities:
- Interconnection with Moldavia – Margineni storage facility.
Interconnection with the Nabucco pipeline
